The Crew

The admiral is Diana and I am the Captain George Hill. In addition we have two deck hands that can't seem to do much right except sleep. They are Pikka and Oreo.
George did a delivery trip through the Trent Severn in 1985 and has always wanted to return with enough time to see all that was missed on a quick delivery trip. Now that he has retired there is finally time.
We hope to be joined by many of our friends and family along the way.

About Memories

Memories is a 2008 47' Gibson houseboat. It is powered by twin Yanmar 110 horse power diesels.

We traded our older Gibson for this boat to get several options that we wanted for long range cruising, the front shear, an inverter and most importantly the small diesels. The smaller engines will limit our top speed to about 15 MPH but when crusing at 8 -9 we should get 3.5 to 4 MPG.

With 240 gallon fuel capacity, 100 gallaon freshwater and 100 gallons holding we expect to cruise remote areas without concern for where the next marina is.

Because this is the first Gibson with the small Yanmar's the dealer, Wahoo-Marine, asked to display the boat at the St Louis boat show. That is where the picture was taken.

Plans for our Trip

We will take delivery of Memories in St Charles, MO. the middle of March. We will cruise down the Mississippi and up the Ohio and Cumberland rivers to Lake Barkley in Kentucky and Tennessee starting in early May. We will spent May and June seeing Lake Barkley and going up river to Nashville. Then in Septmeber and October we will cruise Kentucky Lake and up the Tennessee river a least as far as Chatanooga and possible all the way to Knoxville. Then we will return to St Charles to put the boat in winter storage.

In the spring of 2009 we will leave St Charles and go up the Illinois river to Chicago, north on Lake Michigan, east through Lake Huron, the North Channel and Gerogian Bay. (If your mental map is lost get out your atlas and follow along.) From Georgian Bay we will enter the Trent Severn Waterway to Lake Ontario, down the Bay of Quinte to Kingston. At Kingston we enter the Rideau Canal which goes to Ottawa where we enter the Ottawa river and go down to Montreal. From there we go down the St Lawrence to Sorel and enter the Chambly canal that takes us to Lake Champlain and back into the USA.

From Lake Champlain we will go south into the Hudson river then turn west at Troy into the Erie canal. If we are still on schedule we will spent a week or two exploring Lakes Cayuga and Seneca (two of the finger lakes that can be reached from the Erie). We will then exit the Erie canal down the Oswego river to Oswego, NY on the shore of Lake Ontario. We will then cross Lake Ontario back to the Trent Severn and return west along the route that brought us east. The plan is to be back in St Charles by late September. In 2010, if we are still talking to each other and have not found other waters to explore we will bring Memories up the Mississippi to Minnesota.
